Two metro police officers are suing Savannah Metro’s top brass and the city of Savannah for racial discrimination. Both officers claim Chief Willie Lovett said they need not apply for a promotion because the position was reserved for a white applicant.
Attorneys for Police Captain Dean Fagerstrom tell WJCL News the Metro Police Department is working on a quota system. Fagerstrom has been with Metro Police for more than 30 years. A lawsuit filed September 6, 2013 says Fagerstrom, an Asian American, is more than qualified to become a police Major. During a staff meeting in 2011, Chief Willie Lovett announced a promotional opportunity for the rank of Major, and the lawsuit accuses Lovett of telling his officers, “You all know this is a white position.”
