A city of Savannah VAC truck was completely destroyed when it caught fire just off a set of railroad tracks on the city’s eastside.
Savannah Fire & Emergency Services firefighters were able to halt the blaze that erupted just before 7 p.m. Thursday near the railroad tracks that cross East Gwinnett between East Broad and Atlantic streets from the vehicle used to vacuum city streets, but the fire did spread to a small, wooden sewer pumping station, said Mark Keller, Savannah Fire spokesman.
City workers were able to escape the truck without injury, Keller said, but the vehicle was a total loss. The entire incident occurred on city property.
Investigators are uncertain what caused the vehicle to catch fire, Keller said. They are continuing to look into the incident.
