An emergency evacuation helicopter landed on the 45-yard line at the Glynn County stadium Friday night to transport an injured Coffee County player to the hospital.
Coffee County player Jalen Wilkerson suffered a neck injury in the third quarter in the game against Brunswick High School. Wilkerson, who suffered a jammed neck a few years ago, was taken to a trauma center in Savannah as a precaution.
The stadium announcer instructed spectators to move to the western end of the stadium clearing the stands on the end from which the helicopter approached. The teams left the field and waited in the field house.
Before the helicopter landed, emergency workers placed lights on the field to guide the landing.The TraumaOne helicopter came in from the south and landed on the field about 10 p.m. As emergency medical workers moved Wilkerson from an ambulance and lifted him onto the helicopter, he waved to the crowd which applauded and cheered.
After being on the field a matter of minutes, the helicopter lifted almost straight up into the night sky and flew away as the crowd continued to applaud.The game was resumed after a one-hour delay. Brunswick won 26-19.
