Camden delays action on micro brewery request

Special to SEGAZINE

WOODBINE —The Camden County Board of Commissioners this week delayed the approval of request by Ronald and Catherine Lewis to locate a micro brewery at 4457 Dover Bluff Road in the county until the Dec. 10 regular meeting pending a report from planning director John Peterson.

The decision followed a public hearing in which one resident opposed the amendment of the Unified Development Code to include a micro or craft distillery, and two opposed to the request to locate such an operation in the county.

Commissioner Gary Blount opposed the change to the UDC, which passed 3-1, and made a motion to table the Lewis request, which failed 3-1.

Vice chairman Jimmy Starline made a motion that the request be approved, but even he did not vote for it as the motion failed 4-0, but his motion to reconsider the request at the December meeting passed unanimously.

In other business, the board:

• Approved $1,000 performance award to full-time employees who have held their jobs prior to Dec. 10, 2013, and partial awards to others provided they have no disciplinary actions on their records.

• Approved a list of surplus items to be auctioned off with the proceeds being paid directly to the county.

• Approved an architect contract for the jail expansion.

• Announced an opening on the board of equalization.
