It will be sticky and sweet in the syrup shed on Chesser Island Saturday when the refuge holds its annual sugar cane boil. Visitors to the ONWR will be able to grind sugar cane using a traditional mule-operated grinder and watch as volunteers boil down a vat of sweet cane juice to produce old-fashioned cane syrup. Cooking and preparation of the cane will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. Visitors can head down to the Chesser Island boardwalk at 11 a.m. and take part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly completed walkway.
