Two women killed when tree falls onto car on Blythe Island

Special to SEGAZINE

A pine tree fell onto a car on Blythe Island Wednesday morning, killing the two women who were riding in it, police said.

The women, whose identities have not been released, were traveling north on Georgia 303 just before 11 a.m. when the dead pine fell from the edge of woods off the eastern shoulder of the highway just north of the Interstate 95 overpass, police said.

The rotten top of the tree came down in the middle of the Nissan’s roof, crushing it. The car spun around and came to rest just off the opposite shoulder of the three-lane section of road with the huge piece of the tree lying beside it.

Glynn County police and firefighters encircled the car with their trucks and other vehicles to shield it from passing motorists. Once the coroner arrived, firefighters began prying open the doors and cutting away the roof to remove the victims.

Strong winds were blowing at the time and a Glynn County public works employee told police at least one other tree had blown down.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.
