The Bacon County Fire Board held what Bacon County’s legal organ, The Alma Times, has protested as an illegal closed session last Wednesday, November 20, and Times Editor Carol Lee Youngblood says enough is enough when it comes to governments here violating the Sunshine Law.
“The fire board held a called meeting last Wednesday, immediately going into closed session,” says Youngblood. “The stated purpose of the meeting was to discuss ‘personnel’, however, the board – by their own admission – discussed the fire department pay scale. Compensation for a specific employee may be discussed behind closed doors, but pay scale is policy, not personnel. Government entities cannot discuss how to spend taxpayer dollars in such a general way in secret.”
