A seven car pile-up crash on I-95 Tuesday afternoon involving three tractor-trailers, a pickup truck towing a fifth-wheel camper and three other cars claimed the lives of three Florida residents.

Rocco Urso, 80, and his wife Heidi Urso, 76, of Bonita Springs, Fla., were killed when a tractor-trailer collided with their Lexus SUV adjacent to the northbound off ramp at exit 29, according to Trooper Chris Young of the Georgia State Patrol. The impact from the collision was powerful enough to cause the cab of the tractor-trailer to crush most of the SUV underneath it.

Also killed in the chain reaction crash was Reinhold Steinhilber, 71, of Altamote Springs, Fla. His wife, Carol Steinhilber, 67, was treated for injuries at Southeast Georgia Health System and released.

Others injured in the crash were Gage Reed, 21, whose driver’s license listed him at an address in Maine, Young said. Reed suffered several facial lacerations and possibly other injuries, Young said. Reed was in surgery Tuesday night and is expected to recover.

Young said Douglas Shattell, 47, of Baldwinsville, N.Y. and his passenger Deborah Saya, 56, were walking around the scene after the crash. Young was unsure on Wednesday morning if Shattell and Saya had been treated for any injuries.

The Special Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash and will recommend any possible charges that may be filed.
