Fort Stewart among US bases losing Army brigade

Special to SEGAZINE

Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia stands to lose 6.6 percent of its soldiers under the Army’s plan to reduce its forces by 2017.

Gen. Ray Odierno, the Army chief of staff, named Fort Stewart on Tuesday among 10 Army posts that will shrink under a restructuring plan to cut a total of 80,000 soldiers.

Army documents show Fort Stewart, home of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, would lose about 1,400 troops total and one of its three combat brigades. Fort Stewart currently has about 21,100 soldiers.

The Army says each of the targeted bases would lose a combat brigade, which typically have 3,500 to 5,000 soldiers. But reductions will be somewhat offset by adding battalions of 600 to 800 troops to surviving brigades.
