It will likely be next week before the Atkinson County Health Department can resume services in its old offices in downtown Pearson, after mold and mildew forced the department out of its year-old building.
Although equipment from the mold-infested building off U.S. 82 has been cleaned and moved into the old building, the health department cannot reopen until it has computer equipment in place, said Roger Naylor, spokesman for the Southeast Health District.
The move into the old offices will be only temporary, said Terry Morris, chairman of the Atkinson County Commission.
The health department must reoccupy the newer building or the county would have to repay a state grant of more than $600,000 it received to build the office, he said.
