The governing authority of this state-owned island is working on an agreement to save the number 31527.
That’s the island’s zip code, and the Jekyll Island Authority wants to save it and the U.S. post office that goes with it.
The authority has been in communication with the U.S. Postal Service as it seeks to cut back some of its services including home delivery, said Chris O’Donnell, who provides legal services for the authority. Rather than move mail delivery to another post office and thus another zip code, the Postal Service has agreed to keep the post office on Jekyll Island provided the authority can deliver an office with a central location, O’Donnell said.
In exchange, the Postal Service has agreed to extend counter service hours from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and to provide all permanent residents with a free post office box, O’Donnell said. It is now open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
